The Ukrainian World of Amber conference

On 18th-19th October 2007 on the initiative and under the pressure of social and scientific organizations of Ukraine there was called a scientific conference on the activation of scientific research, the improvement of legislation and conducting business activity in the field of searching after deposits, output, processing and trade of amber and its products.

The conference was held under the patronage of and even supported by the most important national institutions for this subject: the Ukrainian Science Academy, the Ministry of Environment Protection and the Ministry of Finance and the local authorities of Rowienski Disctrict where can be found the main known deposits of amber. However, the spiritus movens remained the UKRAINIAN HOMELAND foundation, supported by the Ukrainian diaspora from all the countries situated in the area providing amber, the Baltic-Dnepr geological province, mostly from Poland, Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. The outline of the borders of this province is presented by the following sketch.
The plenary sessions of the conference took place in a big session hall of the Ukrainian Science Academy and they were chaired by professor Piotr Gozyk, a member of the Ukrainian Science Academy, a director of the Institute of Geological Research. Moreover, in three thematic sections the reports were presented and the participants discussed all the issues concerning amber – from the genesis and deposits to the industry and from the ancient history to the contemporary artistic avant-garde.
The conference adopted a final resolution whose text, after being translated from the Ukrainian language into English and the languages of all the countries taking part, will be published in the official journals and delivered to the participants of the sessions. The resolution anticipates the directions of amber research in accordance with the suggestions of professor Barbara Kosmowska-Ceranowicz. They are to consist in a thorough complement of chemical and physical analysis with the research of the remains of ancient flora and fauna contained in amber. The second, equally important task of science is still searching after deposits suitable for exploitation which will eliminate current deficit of this product.
The participants of the conference had the opportunity to familiarize with the method of exploitation of the only one deposit currently being in use in Ukraine in the town of Klesov in Polesie Wolynskie.
