Sunny Amber Workshop – as this is the name of this year’s Amber Day – was celebrated on 28th July at Targ Weglowy in Gdansk.
Amber Day is an event organized by
International Amber Association in cooperation with Gdansk International Fair, having existed since 1999 at Targ Weglowy while
St Dominic’s Fair in Gdansk. Its aim is a widely understood promotion of amber and Pomerania as a region highly connected with amber trade. This year the event has been named Sunny Amber Workshop because its program consisted of numerous events with the sun in their names: the exhibition of amber cockerels and suns and the workshop and the competition concerning a jewellery design with the image of the sun “Amber sun”. With each passing year there are more and more events, inter alia a presentation of inclusions prepared by the
Museum of Inclusions in Amber of Gdansk University, a show of the most ancient ways of amber processing presented by Eryk Popkiewicz, qualifying rounds for
World Championship in Amber Collection and many workshops and competition for the audience which were connected with this stone. An inherent part of event’s program have become selected j
ewellery and fashion shows which had their premiere while
International Fair of Amber, Jewellery and Gemstones Amberif – this time the audience had the opportunity to see “Can you imagine” prepared by Agnieszka Gruszka (fashion) and Aleksander Gliwinski (amber jewellery).

The organizers try to invite the audience to join the shared fun with an inseparable element being a creation of amber ornaments – so far there have been inter alia an Amber Necklace, an Amber Bracelet and an Amber Crown. This year the guests and the audience, under artistic custody of Mariusz Drapikowski, together created an Amber Cockerel, a symbol of St Dominic’s Fair. Its torso was made of polyester resin according to the design by Marzena Niecko and was covered with 10 kilos of the pieces of amber (the continuation of the work is anticipated for Amber Fair Ambermart from 6th to 8th September this year). Until the end of St Dominic’s Fair, that is until 19th August, it will have been presented at Plac Kobzdeja in Gdansk and will be accompanied by the previous fair’s cockerels, among other things Post, Ethnic, Gdansk and Football Cockerels – they constitute a gallery of cockerels which is supposed to consist of 75 items while 750th Anniversary of St Dominic’s Fair in 2010.
