On 2nd July in the Museum of Amber in Gdansk took place a special vernissage of the “Amber Seekers” exhibition by Eryk Popielewicz and Paulina Binek. During the vernissage commemorative diplomas were given to the people and institutions supporting the museum.
The exhibition consists of old and modern clothes of amber seekers together with their descriptions, various types of “northern gold” nuggets often accompanied by balanus shells and also a gallery of photos and a film about the seekers. Decidedly different are the exhibits prepared by Paulina Binek: small sticks, boards, sand and amber thrown out by sea – presented in a poetic way. They are labelled with an appropirate artistic comment and have become the elements of a paintings cycle entitled “Sea Shores”, inspired by wandering through wild beaches of the Vistula Spit and the stories taken from a mythology of the Baltic countries.
This whole is completed by the photos presenting modern techniques of legal seeking and extraction of amber in Gdansk districts of Stogi and Przerobka by Michal Kosior. While providing comments on the exhibition it was emphasized that it is of great value in the program “Gdansk – the World Capital of Amber”: the visitors of the Museum of Amber should leave it with a conviction that we not only design and make great objects of amber but we also extract and seek it using methods which are as historical as the amber industry itself.
The exhibition will have be presented in the Museum of Amber till the end of September and its finissage has been planned for 28 th August as one of the attractions of the Ambermart fair. 2008-07-22 |
