Amber Handicraft: the National Competition for Goldsmiths and Jewellers

The competition has been organised by the Goldsmiths and Jewellers Trade Commission of the Pomeranian Craft Chamber of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises and the Gdansk International Fair Co. / MTG SA since 2003. Its goal is to present the professional skills displayed by goldsmiths and young goldsmith apprentices who specialise in traditional and contemporary goldsmith techniques, to support goldsmith vocational training and encourage professional skills development. In this way, the organisers want to advance unique design which follows the authors individual needs, and to promote jewellery made with amber.

During the AMBERIF International Fair of Amber, Jewellery and Gemstones t he Jury: Paolo Novembri of the TJF Group (Chairman), President of the Association of Jewellery Experts (SRJ) Tomasz Kłoczewiak, co-owner of the Atelier MJM company Marek Jóźwiak, artist Karol Maciejewski and Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź Andrzej Szadkowski assessed 47 entries submitted by 28 artists and decided to award the following prizes:

The Mercurius Gedanensis Jewellery Competition for the Exhibitors at the Amberif International Fair of Amber, Jewellery and Gemstones has been held since 1995. It is organised by the Gdańsk International Fair Co. / MTG SA. Its goal is to distinguish jewellery designs which reflect contemporary trends in fashion, show impeccable jewellery technique and are interesting as the export offer of the Polish jewellery and amber industry.

Apart from the Fair’s primary function as an effective meeting place for Buyers and Sellers, it is a long-standing tradition of the AMBERIF International Fair of Amber, Jewellery and Gemstones to support non-commercial activities aimed at promoting Baltic amber. These activities, with an established renown, include Amberif Design Award / Elektronos, the international competition which focuses the attention of artists who use amber in their artistic work. Every year, the post-competition exhibition becomes a medium to compare the artistic statements on a specific amber topic.

It is not without reason that as many as three cyclical amber jewellery competitions take place in Poland during the Amberif International Fair of Amber, Jewellery and Gemstones in Gdansk: the Amberif Design Award, Mercurius Gedanensis and Amber in Handicraft
